It is perhaps fitting that this release is on Blue Note, the label that released so much classic material of the late 1940s and 1950s. On 52nd Street Themes, Joe Lovano acknowledges the major influences on him personally from that time period, notably composer Tadd Dameron and orchestrator Willie "Face" Smith, fellow Cleveland natives and colleagues of Lovano's father. Five of Dameron's and one of Smith's compositions are featured here along with Thelonious Monk's "52nd Street Theme" and Lovano's "Abstractions on 52nd Street" for solo tenor. Smith has orchestrated seven of the tunes for nonet. His charts for the horns together with the swinging rhythm section evoke the big band era, yet the arrangements give the musicians the freedom to keep the feel fresh and loose. Lovano is true to himself within the context of the material, and his solos ensure that the tunes successfully fuse past and present. Some modern jazz afficionados may be surprised by the traditional elements in this latest offering from Lovano, but bebop fans will certainly be delighted by it. --Madelyn Cohen
